has affiliations with local institutions and medical
facilities in California.
The publisher is located
in
Mission Viejo, California, a planned community in
Orange county. The city was founded in 1969 by the
owners of the Mission Viejo Ranch who developed one of
the first planned communities in California. The city is
home to one of the three trauma centers of Orange County
and one of the first trauma centers accredited by the
American College of Surgeons in 1979.
Mission Hospital began as a small community hospital
in 1971 but has grown with the community. It is now a
338 bed acute care hospital with an ambitious expansion
plan to accomodate the rapid population growth of
southern California.
The city contains a junior
college,
Saddleback College, with an enrollment of nearly
25,000. A nursing school is training RNs and LVNs plus
an EMT program trains paramedics and other medeical
technicians. The college bookstore carries medical
textbooks including those published by Asklepiad Press.
The
University of Southern California is located in Los
Angeles and the
Keck School of Medicine, its affiliated medical
school, operates four hospitals on the medical campus.
The

California 90033, is across the street from LA County/USC
Medical Center, one of the USC affiliated hospitals at
the Health Sciences campus.

The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London
conducts a year-long course on history of medicine and
grants a diploma, which is the most respected
certificate in this subject. The Society was chartered
in 1617 as one of the City Livery Companies by James I
and, after the Apothecaries Act of 1815, it became the
licensing body and professional society of general
practitioners in the United Kingdom. Apothecaries Hall,
its headquarters, is the oldest livery company hall in
London. One recommended textbook for the course on
medical history is published by Asklepiad Press.
A major program in the US is the
Yale University program in history of medicine and
science.
